Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the most effective treatment for menopausal symptoms. As well as alleviating hot flushes and other symptoms, if started within 10 years of the onset of menopause, reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. HRT will reduce the risk of osteoporosis and fractures started at any age after the menopause.
We will discuss your risks and benefits from HRT in your first video consultation. Our aim is to provide you with up to date information. We use natural, plant based HRT (body-identical hormones) which come from the yam plant, and is chemically identical to our bodies hormones. This is the safest form of HRT.
The risks of HRT, including the risks of breast cancer and blood clots, are small. In most women the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks, when started within 10 years of the onset of menopause. The choice of HRT is pertinent to maintaining safety.
For women who are at higher risk of a blood clot, suffer with migraines or have liver disorders, transdermal oestrogen (patch or a gel) is safe. Bioidentical hormones (natural hormones) have been shown to have the lowest risk of breast cancer, clots and cardiovascular disease, and our experts will guide you in finding the most appropriate type for you.
The time leading up to menopause, when our ovaries start to produce less hormones, but we still continue to have periods, is known as perimenopause. This begins on average at the age of 40. Some women will start to experience some of the symptoms of menopause, such as joint pains, brain fog, or reduced energy and libido at perimenopause. Nutritional and lifestyle changes are key at this stage of life, both to relieve initial symptoms but also to prepare for a healthy and easy menopause. By making changes early you can maintain focus and energy, and prevent menopause being a stumbling block in your career and family life.
Women with troubling symptoms in perimenopause can also be safely started on HRT if needed. Our doctors are experts on tailoring the dose of HRT depending on your stage of menopause, degree of symptoms, and your risk profile.
Our GPs have a special interest and extra training in Menopause Care. Whereas some GPs may not feel comfortable prescribing HRT in women with risk factors, such as a family history of blood clots or breast cancer, our doctors are experts in menopause care and understand how to prescribe safely in women with higher risks. We communicate (with your consent) with your own GP and encourage you to do the same.

Truth is, I’ve had a fairly warped relationship with food ever since I can remember and after 30 years+ of disordered eating and then more recently coming into perimenopause, I felt totally resigned.
